How Does NFC Work? A Simple Guide to Tap-to-Share Technology

NFC stands for Near Field Communication, and despite the technical name, the idea behind it is refreshingly simple: two devices that are close together can talk to each other without any cables, Bluetooth pairing, or app downloads. You've almost certainly used it already β€” it's the same technology behind contactless card payments and Apple Pay / Google Pay.

The Short Version

Every NFC card (including every IDBIZ card) has a tiny chip and a coil of copper wire embedded inside it β€” both are invisible to the eye and add no real thickness to the card. When you bring that card within a few centimetres of a smartphone, the phone's own NFC reader sends out a small burst of radio energy. That energy powers up the chip in the card (it needs no battery of its own) just long enough for it to send back a tiny piece of data: in our cards' case, a web address.

The whole exchange happens in well under a second, which is why it feels instant β€” there's no "connecting," no waiting, no permission prompt on most modern phones. Tap, and the destination opens.

What's Actually Being Sent?

It's easy to assume something complicated is happening, but the chip in an NFC business card typically stores just one thing: a URL. When our cards are programmed, that's a link to your digital profile, your Google review page, your TikTok, or wherever you want the tap to lead. The phone reads that link the same way it would if you'd typed it into a browser β€” NFC is just a much faster, friendlier way of getting it there than reading it off a card and typing it out by hand.

Do You Need an App?

No β€” and this is the detail that surprises people most. Virtually every smartphone sold in the last several years (iPhone 7 and later, and the vast majority of Android phones since around 2016) has NFC reading built into the operating system itself. No app, no setup, nothing to install. The phone just needs its screen to be on and unlocked, and NFC needs to be switched on in settings (it's on by default on almost every phone).

What About Older Phones?

A small number of older or budget devices don't have NFC. That's exactly why every IDBIZ card also carries a printed QR code on the reverse β€” the same destination, reachable with a quick camera scan instead of a tap. Between the two, a card works with essentially 100% of smartphones in circulation, which is why we build every card with both technologies from the start rather than relying on just one.

Why This Matters for Business Cards

Once you understand that an NFC card is really just a fast, effortless way of opening a link, it's easy to see why it's replaced paper for so many professionals. A hybrid digital business card can open your entire contact profile β€” phone, email, socials, website, a "save to contacts" button β€” in the time it takes to tap. A Google review card can take a happy customer straight to your review page instead of asking them to search for your business by name. Same underlying technology, aimed at whatever action you actually want to happen next.
